Valuing the benefits provided by the NHS outdoor estate: making a business case

The green and blue spaces that make up the NHS estate provide a range of benefits to patients, staff and the people who live around them. For example, they sequester carbon, take up air pollutants, and provide habitat for biodiversity. Vitally they also provide physical and mental health benefits. Two projects led by Natural Capital Solutions, focused on the NHS outdoor estate in Scotland, have demonstrated that it is possible to value these benefits to make a business case to better integrate nature on hospital estates. It saves costs to the NHS, addresses health inequalities, the climate and nature emergencies, and promotes environmental sustainability.
